5 Pieces Of Cycling Gear You Will Want If You Are Cycling While Pregnant

Whether you are an occasional commuter or a cycling enthusiast, there are several benefits to continuing to cycle while you are pregnant. While you should talk to your doctor about the risks and make sure you know how to remain safe if you are cycling while pregnant, you should not be afraid of continuing a healthy, doctor-approved sport throughout your pregnancy. However, you will have to make some adjustments to how you ride and you may want to purchase some new gear to support your changing body while cycling. Below are five pieces of gear you should make sure you own if you decide to cycle while pregnant. 

A Padded Seat 

If you are not already riding with a well-padded seat, you should be. However, it is even more crucial that you have adequate padding when you are pregnant. Pregnancy can cause constipation and hemorrhoids. Riding, especially for a prolonged period of time, can aggravate hemorrhoids. To avoid aggravation and help keep your potential hemorrhoids in check, you should invest in adequate padding. 

The good news is that you have several padding options. You can invest in a more comfortable saddle if you want to wear your street clothes as opposed to cycling gear. Alternatively, you can look into cycling shorts with padding made especially for pregnant women. These shorts will fit comfortably over your bump, making sure everything stays in place so you can concentrate on riding. 

An Appropriate Sports Bra

One of the first signs of pregnancy is often sore and tender breasts. To make a bouncy ride more comfortable, you should be sure to purchase a supportive, well-fitting sports bra. You should also keep in mind that your breasts will likely grow while you are pregnant, so you may need to be refitted for a new bra multiple times to maintain your best fit. 

Handlebars that Support an Upright Riding Position 

If you are currently riding with flat or drop handle bars, you may want to consider riser bars or cruiser handlebars, both of which support a more erect riding position. As your uterus grows, you will have less space for your other internal organs, including your lungs. An erect riding position will help you breathe easier and relieve strain on your lower back, which can be problematic during late pregnancy. 

A Front Basket 

If you usually ride with a backpack or messenger bag, you should invest in a front basket or a solid set of panniers to transport your belongings. This will take unnecessary weight and stress off of your body and place it on the frame of the bike. It will also help you maintain your balance while riding, which can be an issue if you do not ride regularly during pregnancy or you have a sudden change of weight or shape. 

A Step-through Frame

If you are considering a new bicycle during your pregnancy, you should think about purchasing a step-through frame. These frames are often referred to as ladies' frames and feature a low cross bar that is easy to step over. As your pregnancy progresses, it may become more difficult to lift your leg over the rear of the saddle. A step-through frame will allow you to easily mount your bike and provide extra stability when you are stopped on your bike. 

Riding a bike can be an excellent, low-impact way to maintain your cardiovascular health throughout your pregnancy.
